Reviewing (and Comparing) Tonga Toast at Disney’s Polynesian Resort & Rainforest Cafe

One of our favorite meals at Walt Disney World has long been breakfast at Disney’s Polynesian Resort in the form of Tonga Toast. Tonga Toast is french toast stuffed with bananas, and shouldn’t be missed. Last week, a friend mentioned that the Rainforest Cafe also has Tonga Toast on the breakfast menu. Since we were heading to Disney’s Animal Kingdom park this past weekend, we decided to try it to compare the two Tonga Toast options.

It has been just two weeks since our Kona Cafe visit. Kona Cafe is located on the second floor of Disney’s Polynesian Resort and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There is a lot of construction right now at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. On the wall outside of Kona Cafe, guests can currently have their photo taken with this artwork of Lilo & Stitch.

Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe comes with a Strawberry Compote and a side of ham, bacon or sausage for $12.99. We always split one Tonga Toast, it is huge! And we always add a side of breakfast potatoes, which is also an option at Captain Cook’s. The main difference between the Tonga Toast here and at Captain Cook’s is the addition of the Strawberry Compote (and the price). Jeff also enjoyed a French Press Pot of Kona Coffee, which is a must here if you like coffee! Guests can even purchase bags of coffee to go.

I have attempted making Tonga Toast just once – it was not difficult, but I set the oil on fire. 🙂 It is a lot easier for us to head to Disney’s Polynesian Resort!

The breakfast potato portion size is about the same as at Captain Cook’s.

Check out the bananas stuffed inside. So yummy! Tonga Toast is sweet, but not too sweet. Most of the sweetness is on the outside, and then from the bananas.

The Strawberry Compote reminded me of the Strawberry Soup at 1900 Park Fare. I didn’t want to dip the Tonga Toast in it, so I poured it into the coffee cup and enjoyed it as a drink.

If you’ve never tried Tonga Toast, it is worth the visit to Disney’s Polynesian Resort!

It has been years since we’ve visited the Rainforest Cafe, over 10 years for each of us. Jeff and I are both Landry’s Select members, which is a great deal – there are so many restaurant options. For $25 each, we purchased the card last year. Then we received an immediate $25 credit, and now we have a $25 credit each year on our birthdays. This was my second birthday $25, so it has made the card well worth it. Rainforest is just one of the restaurants available. Others include Yak & Yeti, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Morton’s.

Jeff poses with the Rainforest Cafe frog. The Rainforest Cafe breakfast ends at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at 10:15 a.m. – that is the time they stop seating. We were told 10:30 a.m. on the phone, so they honored that time for us.

This was our view from our seat. It wasn’t busy when we arrived, since they had just ended breakfast and were starting to seat for lunch.

Every 10 minutes or so, the rainforest comes to life.

There are fish tanks around the restaurant, we were seated up against one. We enjoyed watching the different fish!

Here is our Tonga Toast dish at the Rainforest Cafe. It consists of French Toast with cinnamon, along with a strawberry and banana topping. It came with a side of bacon. The Tonga Toast here is fairly standard french toast, but is a solid breakfast for anyone wanting an early meal before entering Disney’s Animal Kingdom park.

We split the Tonga Toast, as well as one other entree.

Since we had $25 to spend from Landry’s, we ordered an omelet to also split. This was a huge meal, we really only needed one entree instead of two! The omelet was delicious. I’d read complaints about the breakfast potatoes since they don’t seem like fresh cut potatoes, but they were pretty good. I often don’t like this style of fried potatoes. Toast also came on the side.

My favorite fish to watch was this polka-dotted Panther Grouper. He is so unique!

This was our balance due with the Landry’s $25 credit. It was a bargain for 2 meals! And I think we will be back to Rainforest Cafe sooner than later, the food was good and it’s very convenient for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The portions were large and we could have just split one easily.
