Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort To Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Villas Photo Walk 2012

Disney’s “One More Disney Day” event ended up bumping the publishing of this photo walk by a couple of extra days! This is also my longest Photo Walk for 2012 so far.
The Fort Wilderness to Wilderness Lodge walk is probably my favorite on property, I’ve walked the paths between the two resorts hundreds of times over the years. At dawn or dusk you are likely to find deer. There are also a lot of different birds to look at, along with the occasional armadillo or rabbit. I even once saw what looked like a coyote a number of years ago well ahead of me – but mostly I see deer!
This Photo Walk shows how to get from Fort Wilderness to the Wilderness Lodge, but most of the photos are around the Wilderness Lodge and Wilderness Lodge Villas.
I don’t recommend the walk between Fort Wilderness and the Wilderness Lodge at night unless you have a friend and a flashlight. I’ve done it without either, and almost ended up with a sprained ankle. I also remember once walking after dark with a friend, and hearing an armadillo just inches ahead of me. An armadillo is fine, but I don’t like unknown noises in the dark! Really, it’s better during daylight hours – I prefer a bus or boat between these resorts at night.
I parked at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge before walking over to Fort Wilderness for the start of the walk. This first photo was actually the last one taken before I left for the day!
It took about 20 minutes to walk over to Fort Wilderness, starting where we left off during the Fort Wilderness Photo Walk. I take photos first and then time the walk. We are at the Fort Wilderness Settlement in front of Pioneer Hall, starting the walk at 11:42 – the pony area will be on our right as we head towards the path (it used to be a petting zoo).

I didn’t have time to get a good shot of this cardinal, but I am posting it because I see more colorful birds here than I do anywhere else.
Normally I’d just walk past the stables and across the street. Instead, I wanted to share a couple of photos of the train tracks from the former Fort Wilderness Railroad. The Railroad lasted a very short time, ending in 1977. I never had the chance to ride it, I was just starting to go to Walt Disney World at that time – but Jeff did! There are other tracks in Fort Wilderness, these are across from the Settlement bus stop. Fort Wilderness is extremely pedestrian friendly (and bike friendly), but this area does have buses coming in and out of here – so please take care when crossing. 🙂
We are walking along the grass to get to the path, you’ll see the horse barn on the right hand side across the street.
We’ll be turning left on the path, arriving here at 11:45am.
This is a lovely, quiet path, but many guests do use it on bike or foot. I heard woodpeckers, found a couple of deer, and just really enjoyed the walk, as I always do. I was hoping to get here a little earlier than I did, deer are much more abundant at dawn.
