Boma Breakfast Review at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (Jambo House) from January 2012

There is one restaurant that has been on my must-do list longer than nearly other, and that is Boma: Flavors of Africa. I was one of the first to try Boma when I was a Cast Member, on a test stay before Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge opened to the public. I was lucky enough to preview both breakfast and lunch during that stay, and I’ve been back to Boma many, many times since the

You don’t have to be adventurous to dine at Boma, I’m not – but I do like a lot of different flavors, and there are some wonderfully unique dishes (especially at dinner) that you’ll be hard pressed to find at many restaurants.

We invited friends to join us for Jeff’s birthday, and we ended up with a table of 14. They were ready for us, and seated us all together.

The signature juice when Boma opened was called Jungle Juice – at some point it changed to Frunch, and this time it was Jungle Juice again. It tastes the same to me either way, and is practically worth the price of breakfast in itself. I also had a cup of Twinings green tea.

My first plate included carved turkey with Boma mustard (I don’t usually like mustard, but this one is delicious and perfect for the turkey!), a small piece of banana bread, a scone, and grilled asparagus and tomato. It’s really hard to choose between breakfast and lunch foods, it did help that we were seated at 10:40am (so it was more like a brunch as opposed to arriving early). There was also carved ham. I don’t eat a lot of asparagus at home, but I would if I could make it like this.

Jeff had a made-to-order omelet, along with asparagus and sausage. The omelet line can get a little long, but it didn’t take him long to get back to the table with it. Nearly everything that could be added to an omelet is in this one!

My second plate featured bacon, eggs, breakfast potatoes and french toast (the plates I used were small, not standard size). The breakfast potatoes and eggs were just so-so and not really worth choosing over some of the other dishes. I can make both better at home, easily.  The french toast, however, was excellent. There were also waffles.

Menu items do change, although breakfast is very similar each time we’ve gone (we average about once a year for breakfast, and the same for dinner). I’m hoping we can work in another breakfast this year!

Last year for Jeff’s birthday, he was surprised with Zebra Domes (if you’ve never had Zebra Domes, they are a popular dessert that is available for dinner or at The Mara counter service restaurant). This year, the server arrived with two different plates with 4 of the same desserts each. We sent them around the table to share, I have no idea what any of them are, but I have had at least one of the items (the cookie on the left) at Boma for dinner.

I took some photos of items on the buffet. The farthest left side of the buffet is for muffins and pastries, and cold items eventually lead to hot ones – with the carving station on the far right when facing the buffet.

I went back for one last small plate, which I filled with fresh fruit and a pastry:

We had a wonderful meal here, again. In the 11 years of dining here, I have never had a bad experience. There are times when a favorite soup or entree isn’t available, but the service has nearly always been excellent, as has the food. And for the price, I think breakfast is a terrific value if it serves as lunch as well as breakfast.

We enjoyed a few minutes of looking at the animals after breakfast. I’ve stayed here a number of times over the years, and love seeing the different animals whether I’m staying or just visiting for a meal.

Boma costs (as of this writing) $18.99 plus for breakfast, with a seasonal surcharge around the holidays and summer. The seasons seem to keep getting longer, so inquire about the price of any buffet at the time of booking.

We did have a Tables in Wonderland discount of 20%.

We dined here again for dinner just a couple of months ago. If you are interested in a review with photos, please let me know!
