Review: “Thor: Ragnarok” Home Video Release Offers Plethora of Bonus Features

We received Thor: Ragnarok on Blu-ray to review, which offers the Movies Anywhere option with a couple of extra bonus features. There is also a director’s commentary that I have yet to watch. This title offers a very nice collection of features – and you’ll notice below I use the word “fun” a number of times. That is really the word that ties the bonus features together, not only for the viewer but for the actors and filmmakers. It is clear that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi not only has a great sense of humor himself, but that lent itself to filming. So while Thor: Ragnarok wasn’t my personal favorite of all the Marvel films (I personally am an Iron Man franchise fan more than anything), not only is the movie but the bonus features a lot of fun to watch.

Bonus features are best when they feel like an extension of a movie, and the bonus features here are ample and a pleasure to watch. Chris Hemsworth in particular is just a terrific comedic actor and it shows not only through the movie but the extras as well.

Here are some of the highlights of the bonus features.

Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years (5:23) –This follows the evolution of the various characters, from Tony Stark in Iron Man to the most current films and characters. Feige calls it an “unprecedented journey”.

Getting in Touch with Your Inner Thor (6:39) – This is an enjoyable look at the character of Thor.

Unstoppable Women: Hela & Valkyrie (5:58) – There are strong female characters in Thor: Ragnarok in the form of Hela and Valkyrie and we see them (Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson) both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Finding Korg (7:34) –  This was my favorite bonus feature. Director Taika Waititi had several roles in the film, including Korg. We see him in what feels like a scene from “The Office” talking about the role and while playing it. Definitely a must watch!

Sakaar: On the Edge of the Known and Unknown (8:24) – Sakaar is very different than Asgard, and – as a number of bonus features do – pays tribute to the artwork of Jack Kirby. This feature shows how much enjoyment the actors had playing their roles, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleson (Loki) and Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster). Kevin Feige says they wanted to have more fun with Thor, which they were able to do in a new setting.

Journey into Mystery (5:47): Filmmakers and talk about drawing inspiration from the comics. Kevin Feige says that  Taika Waititi went further than in previous films, paying tribute to Jack Kirby. This is a really fun feature, and touches on Hela and Korg as well.

Gag reel (2:17): Cute, but honestly I thought some of the other bonus features had more real gags.

I recommend Thor: Ragnarok, both for the movie and for the bonus features.
