Trail’s End To Go at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground Becomes “P & J’s Southern Takeout” to Honor Longtime Cast Members; Menu Expands

Hi everyone!

This is our favorite time of year at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort as the campground gets ready for Halloween! Our article on Fort Wilderness Halloween decorations is here, but while we were there, we stopped by what used to be called Trail’s End to Go and found that the name has very recently changed to P & J’s Southern Takeout (honoring two longtime Cast Members). The menu has changed some as well, and recently strawberry shortcake was also added.

Trail’s End to Go was a favorite of ours for takeaway food at Walt Disney World, and we will continue to visit under the new branding. Trail’s End is situated next to Pioneer Hall at the Settlement.

The Trail’s End table service restaurant servers breakfast, lunch and dinner. P & J’s Southern Takeout is a breakfast and dinner location.

Here is the new sign, which debuted a couple of weeks or so ago. The letters P & J stand or two longtime hostesses at the restaurant, Paulette and Josephine. We have spent quite a bit of time talking with Josephine in the past few years, but I don’t think I have a current photo of her (I will add more photos in after our next visit). It is really great that Disney chose to honor longtime Cast Members in this way!

There are two sides to the paper menu, breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, guests can take away a Bounty Breakfast for $9.49, or choose items like a Muffin for $3.29, Cinnamon Roll for $3.79, or Oatmeal for $2.79. There are some great choices here, and guests can purchase a nicely wrapped Cornbread Loaf for $3.49 or a Banana Bread Loaf for $4.99 at lunch or dinner. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

For dinner, we usually split The Lone Rider, which is $9.99 for 2 pieces of chicken. It includes 2 sides and a piece of cornbread. For just $1.29, we always add on an extra small side of cornbread. Last year we purchased the Giddyap and Go for $23.99, which includes 10 pieces of chicken and sides. It was plenty for 4 guests with leftover chicken. Guests can also choose from a Large Cheese Pizza for $13.99, Large Pepperoni Pizza for $15.49, a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich for $9.49, or a couple of other sandwiches or salad.

New on the menu since our last visit is Strawberry Shortcake for $5.99 (along with a few other items), and there are healthy vegetable or fruit slices. Chocolate Cake is $4.19, and almost everything is eligible for the Disney Dining Plan.

Dinner is served from 4:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday or 4:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Friday – Saturday.

The counter is close to the main Trail’s End Restaurant.

We asked for all white meat. In the past, I think we were charged $1.00 more, but we weren’t this time. We ended up with two chicken breasts, with a side of cole slaw and mashed potatoes. I have purchased an additional side of mashed potatoes in the past, but that ended up being a lot of potatoes!

The small extra cornbread we purchased for $1.29 is on the left side.

Cornbread should always have its own photo, especially from Trail’s End.

The one item I found a little overpriced was the Strawberry Shortcake for $5.99. It used to be that the wonderful shortcake from the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue was only served at the dinner show or for special occasions at Trail’s End. I remember having it once for my birthday at Trail’s End about 10 years ago. So for many, many years, this wasn’t something you’d see outside of Pioneer Hall much. Now, strawberry shortcake is served on the Trail’s End buffet – I am not sure if it is every day – and we decided for research purposes only that we would try it from P & J’s as well. 🙂 The portion size was just enough for us to split, but not too big that a single guest couldn’t finish it. I think $4.99 would be a better price point, but it does have plenty of fresh strawberries. If you have never had strawberry shortcake from Fort Wilderness, this is the way to do it if not sitting down for a table service meal.

We spent just under $19 for 2 pieces of white meat chicken, sides, along with an extra side of cornbread and then strawberry shortcake. While we really enjoy the Trail’s End buffet, this was more than enough food for us at less than half the cost of one buffet (which is now $25.99 plus tax, still a buffet bargain in my opinion).

Here is a look at the display in the case of P & J’s. Guests can order a side of Macaroni and Cheese as an option as well as French Fries.

If you have snack credits still left over from the Disney Dining Plan, you can’t go wrong with a loaf of Cornbread or Banana Bread made here at Trail’s End.

Here is the Casar Salad with Chicken, vegetables and fruit.

The menu inside lists fewer items than the one we found on paper.

We always recommend dining at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground, whether it be the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, Trail’s End or the newly named P & J’s Southern Takeout. It all includes comfort food and the chicken that Fort Wilderness is so famous for! Trail’s End shares a kitchen with the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, so the food quality is consistent, and has been for the 20 or so years I’ve been visiting the restaurants regularly.

Always be on the lookout for wildlife at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground, we found this deer not far from the restaurant.

We will post our first Halloween article of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground tomorrow!
