Book Review: “Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection” from Insight Editions

We received a copy of Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection from Insight Editions to review. It actually released last month, so it is available to order and receive now.
Insight Editions says of the book, “Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection is a comprehensive visual guide exploring the iconic and legendary lightsabers found within the Star Wars galaxy, featuring fan-favorite hilts from the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, comics, novels, and video games.”
Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection is a handsome, narrow book, 12 x 0.7 x 6 inches with 156 pages. The cover in the photo above showcases what to expect. One thing I really like about Insight Editions is that they always give a good idea of what a book looks like in images. The images here are what what all the pages are like, with a variety of characters from the Star Wars universe on the left hand side of the book with corresponding information, and on the right – the lightsaber the character wields in beautiful detail.
The book starts out talking about what a lightsaber is, and then about how George Lucas including lightsabers in the original Star Wars helped make the film a hit. Lucas said, “The whole premise was that it was a romantic fantasy in the great romantic traditions of mythology and King Arthur”.
Not all characters and lightsabers in the Star Wars universe are included, but for the book price point it is a nice assortment – from Darth Vader to Darth Maul to Luke Skywalker and Mace Windu. Often there is a quote from the actors about their role. And some of the pages have lightsabers that aren’t assigned to just one character – like a training lightsaber.
Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection will make a great gift for someone who is a Star Wars fan. As someone who is a casual fan who enjoys the films, I’m finding it interesting to learn about the different lightsabers.
