18 Disney Books I Look Forward to in Second Half of 2019 – Including Books by Marty Sklar, Jeff Kurtti, Kevin Rafferty

Hi everyone!

There are quite a few Disney books I’m looking forward to in the second half of 2019! I rounded up eighteen that currently are scheduled for this year . A couple of these books may end up getting pushed into another year (as the Ub Iwerks book has been previously) – but hopefully not too many. It really is an abundance for those who love to read Disney books! Most of these are Disney books geared toward adults, a few are aimed to kids. I’ve written a number of book roundups over the past few years, and this year there are a number of Star Wars books – and I didn’t even add in Spider-Man: Far From Home – The Art of the Movie, although I now want to own that one after seeing the film. With Marvel, Muppets, Star Wars, Disney history books, etc., it can be hard to whittle down the list to a reasonable length.

The books are in no specific order, although the Imagineering and art books tend to be my favorites. And there are affiliate links on Amazon throughout. Any books I review I will add a review link to.

1 – Magic Journey: My Fantastical Walt Disney Imagineering Career is scheduled to be released September 10th, 2019. Kevin Rafferty’s 40 year Imagineering career and stories should make for a terrific book!

2 – Walt Disney’s Ultimate Inventor: The Genius of Ub Iwerks (Disney Editions Deluxe) was scheduled for 2018 but was moved to November 12th, 2019 (after being bumped to October earlier this year). I have been looking forward to this one.

3 – Travels with Figment On the Road in Search of Disney Dreams (Disney Editions Deluxe) is scheduled for November 5th, 2019 and will be Disney Legend Marty Sklar’s final book.

4 – The Muppet Christmas Carol: The Illustrated Holiday Classic – It’s for kids, but I will love it too! This is one of a number of books from Insight Editions that look forward to this year. Insight Editions hasn’t been on my list before but it has a lot of releases this year (including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Cookbook and The Art and Making of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance). Releases October 29th, 2019.

5 –The Walt Disney Studios: A Lot to Remember (Disney Editions Deluxe)– This book came out in 2016 and quickly disappeared. We already have this terrific book, but it will be interesting to see what is different when it releases on September 3rd, 2019.

6 –They Drew as They Pleased Vol 5: The Hidden Art of Disney’s Early Renaissance – This is the 5th in a fantastic series from Chronicle Books that I always look forward to and is scheduled to release August 6th, 2019 (I just received a review copy as I was writing this article). From the official description,  “This latest volume from renowned Disney historian Didier Ghez profiles Ken Anderson and Mel Shaw, whose work defined beloved classic Disney characters from films like The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Robin Hood, and The Rescuers.”

7 –The Art and Making of The Lion King (Disney Editions Deluxe (Film)) is about the new The Lion King by Jon Favreau and is scheduled to release on July 16th, 2019.

8 –The Art of Disney Costuming: Heroes, Villains, and Spaces Between (Disney Editions Deluxe) – Jeff Kurtti has had his name on a lot of books in the last couple of years, and this looks to be a unique one!

9 –The Disney Monorail: Imagineering the Highway in the Sky (Disney Editions Deluxe) – There is no cover available yet, but this is to be a 224 page book by Jeff Kurtti and Vanessa Hunt about the Disney monorail. “In The Disney Monorail: Imagineering the Highway in the Sky, discover how this transportation icon has evolved through the years, and across the parks, thanks to a lively narrative and historical visual-development art and photographs.” This is one of the books at the very top of my personal list and is scheduled to be released on October 22nd, 2019. I will add the cover when it is available!

10 – Marc Davis in His Own Words: Imagineering the Disney Theme Parks – This is the most expensive of the books on the list, a 2-volume set that sounds pretty amazing. “Featuring work from the sixties through the eighties, this two-volume set includes more than 1,500 pieces from the Imagineering archives, the vast majority of which have never been published.” This is scheduled for September 3rd, 2019. We had heard about this 2 years ago during a presentation at the D23 Expo.

11 – Mary Blair’s Unique Flair: The Girl Who Became One of the Disney Legends – I have already reviewed this book, I don’t have the hardcover version right now but a preliminary folded and gathered copy – the book releases August 13th, 2019. The artwork by Brittney Lee is stunning and worth buying for that alone – even though it is geared toward kids, a lot of adults will want this one. At the same time, Pencils, Pens & Brushes: A Great Girls’ Guide to Disney Animation by Mindy Johnson will also come out. We have reviewed that one as well, and I enjoyed learning about women in animation, most I’ve not heard of.

12 – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge A Crash of Fate – This is one of several Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge books coming out this year. I look forward to learning more about the place I’m visiting! It releases August 6th, 2019.

13 – Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire (Star Wars) – Another book that will help give backstory to the land that will open at Walt Disney World and is already open Disneyland. It releases August 27th, 2019.

14 –The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company– The book by Robert Iger (and from Random House) releases September 23rd, 2019.

15 – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Cookbook – This is another anticipated book from Insight Editions, and is scheduled to release November 5th, 2019. The cover is not yet final.

16 – How Does the Show Go On The Frozen Edition: An Introduction to the Theater (A Disney Theatrical Souvenir Book) – Scheduled to be released on November 5th, 2019, this book is actually geared more toward kids but sounds like it will be interesting for all ages (it is one of many similar books by Schumacher). Disney says that “this clearly written, lively, and uniquely designed book offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of the theater from the box office to backstage, and beyond.”

17 – Mickey Mouse: From Walt to the World – It’s Mickey Mouse and written by Andreas Deja, scheduled for September 3rd. “Lavishly illustrated with gorgeous art, some of it never before see by the public and published in book form.”

18 – The Art of Star Wars Rebels – Releasing November 5th, 2019, the book is said to be “An incredible hardcover amassing art and creator commentary chronicling four seasons of adventure in a galaxy far, far away!”

Here is to a lot of good reading during the rest of 2019!
